How Bilby answers

Bilby works like an analyst. It searches and reads before it writes, says what it's doing as it goes, and names the sources behind what it writes.

A question and its answer. Numbers match the steps on this page.

Step 1: Start a chat

When you sign in, Bilby opens on Explore, with the question box ready. Already in a chat? Press New chat at the top of the sidebar.

Step 2: Type your question and send it

Write it the way you'd ask a colleague, and press Enter. To start a new line instead, press Shift and Enter together.

Say what you need: the country, the period, and what you'll use the answer for. Bilby does more with a full question than with a few words.

Tip

Rather say it? Press Start voice input, the microphone in the question box, and speak your question.

Step 3: Watch Bilby work

While Bilby works, the line above the answer reads Working and lists what it's doing, such as the searches it runs. A big question can take a minute or two. You don't have to wait: you can leave the chat, and the answer is there when you come back.

If your question could mean several things, Bilby may first ask you a few questions with choices. Pick the answers that fit, or type your own.

When Bilby finishes, the line reads, for example, "Worked for 1 minute 4 seconds." Press it to see every step Bilby took.

Step 4: Read the answer and its sources

After a point, a small chip names its source. Point at a chip to read the passage Bilby used, with a link to the original. See Read the sources.

Note

Under the question box, Bilby reminds you: "Bilby AI can make mistakes. Please check important info." Check the source behind anything you'll rely on.

Step 5: Keep going

Under the answer, Follow-ups suggests questions to ask next. Press one to send it, or type your own in the question box. See Follow up on an answer.

Good to know

  • Effort. Next to the send button, Auto sets how hard Bilby thinks. You can choose Low, Medium, High or Max instead. Auto suits most questions.
  • Agent. The question box shows which of your organization's agents will answer. If there's more than one, pick another before you send: the agent is fixed once the chat starts.
  • A question from a link. When a link types a question in for you, like Open in Bilby on these pages, Bilby opens in the organization you used last. If you're in more than one, the question box shows Asking in and that organization's name. Press it to ask in another one; your question stays typed in.
  • Your chats are yours. Nobody else in your organization can open them, unless you share one in a vault.
